Abstract

826,775. Moulding granular material. FOUNDRY SERVICES Ltd. Jan. 24, 1958 [Jan. 28, 1957], No. 2965/57. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXII] An article comprising at least two layers of compacted granular material is made by feeding the materials which are to form the layers separately into adjacent compartments separated by a removable partition, compacting each in its own compartment by a jolting action, removing the partition and continuing the jolting action until the materials become united at their interfaces. For example, a sleeve consisting of two contacting concentric cylinders, e.g., of sand and exothermic material respectively, is made with the illustrated apparatus in which a cylindrical partition 5 divides the space between a core former 3 and a core box 4 and is removable by means of the plunger 8 of a fluid-operated cylinder 9. The base plate 2 rests upon a vibratory platform 1 which provides the jolting action which is maintained while the granular materials are fed into the mould and compacted and also while the cylinder 5 is slowly removed. Additional material may be added to make up for the loss of volume due to the compacting of the materials and removal of the partition. The sleeve is subsequently stoved to impart rigidity and to improve the anchorage between the sand and the exothermic material.
