Abstract
826,673. Gas burners; hot-plates. SWISS GAS STOVE CO. SOLOTHURN. April 10, 1956 [April 15, 1955; Dec. 31, 1955], No. 10854/56. Classes 75(1) and 126 In a radiation burner 1 comprising gas pervious envelopes 4 heated to incandescence by a gas mixture burning close thereto the outermost envelope being made of thin flexible material such as a wire screen, one or more perforated plates 8 or wire screens are inserted between the envelopes and the mixing chamber 10 of the burner, and the envelopes 4 are kept in close contact at points or along lines distributed over the burner surface or the envelopes 4 are clamped along their rim between flat clamping surfaces or the envelopes 4 are spanned transversely across an elongated burner. The burner shown in Fig. 1 is of rectangular shape and the envelopes 4 are clamped to a flat flange 2 by a rectangular frame 3. The perforated plate 8 is made of heat reflecting material and has openings uniformly distributed over its middle portion. A slide may be movable over the plate 8 to shut off the openings. Alternatively two relatively movable perforated plates 8 may be provided. A rectangular mixing tube 12 leads to the mixing chamber 10 and is fed with gas by a gas pipe 13 having a plurality of nozzles 14 or a discharge slit. In a modification a grate formed by longitudinal and transverse enamelled slats or a honeycomb grate is inserted between the wire envelopes 4 and the perforated plate 8. The lower edges of the slats are curved and engage the envelopes 4. The grate may be secured to the perforated plate 8 or it may rest on the envelopes 4 or it may be urged into contact with the envelopes 4 by means of screws threaded through the burner casing and abutting the grate. Some of the upper edges of the slats may not contact the perforated plate 8. The lower edges of the slats may have projecting lugs contacting the envelopes. In the elongated burner shown in Fig. 8 the envelopes are held taut by members 48 the upper ends of which are engaged by a leaf spring 49. The tube 45 has mixture discharge orifices 46 and is fed by a mixing tube (not shown) which may project coaxially or discharge laterally into the tube 45. In other constructions one of the envelopes is strong and curved and another envelope is stretched across it or the envelopes are welded or cemented in places to each other. In Fig. 9 a thin cooking plate 52 is welded to a rigid ring 50 having stiffening ribs 51 and made of a material of higher coefficient of expansion than the cooking plate. A radiation burner is mounted below the plate and the heat therefrom causes the ring 50 to expand and keep the plate taut.
