Abstract

826,429. Stopping pipes or tubes. HAYWARD, F. G. H. May 2, 1957, No. 14047/57. Classes 99(1) and 99(2). A tube sealing device which may be used as a drain stopper or in testing tube joints comprises resilient rings 9 which are spaced apart on one end of a rod-like handle 1 which is rotatable to expand the rings radially to seal the internal surface of the tube such that one part of the tube bore is longitudinally separated from another part of the bore by a partition 3a, 3b associated with at least one of the rings. The rings 9 seat in grooves 10 formed in discs 6, 7 apertured to receive a rod 1 and in a hollow cylinder 2 which has a central bore 3 through which the rod 1 extends, the discs being located adjacent the end surfaces 3a, 3b of the cylinder. The rod 1 has a handle 13 at one end and a screw-threaded part 5 at the other and is also provided with a collar 4 which bears against the disc 6, the screw-threaded end 5 engaging the screw-threaded bore of the disc 7. Pins 11 extend from each end surface of the cylinder 2 through apertures in each of the discs 6, 7 to prevent relative rotation. A conduit 12 extends through the disc 6 and cylinder 2 to communicate with the space between the rings. Before the device is inserted into a tube it is located in its correct position adjacent the joint to be tested on the outside of the tube and the rod 1 marked so that on insertion into the tube the discs 6, 7 will be correctly positioned. The diameters of the cylinder 2 and discs 6, 7 are slightly less than the internal diameter of the tube and when inserted the handle 13 is turned so that the disc 7 and the cylinder 2 are urged towards the disc 6 thereby compressing the rings 9 which are forced outwardly against the internal tube walls. A pressure pump may be connected to the end 12a of the conduit 12 so that the joint under test may be subjected to the appropriate pressure. Additional sealing means may be provided on the rod and a cam arrangement may be employed instead of the screw-threaded means.
