Abstract

826,173. Roller bearings. PITNER, A., and ROULEMENTS A AIGUILLES S.A., DES. Feb. 8, 1957 [Feb. 10, 1956], No. 4339/57. Class 12 (1). A sheet metal cage for the rollers of a thrust bearing is formed so as to retain the rollers in apertures in the cage. As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the cage is of wave formation radially having portions 3 preventing the rollers 1 from moving lateially in one direction and portions 4 preventing movement in the opposite direction. The inner and outer peripheries 12, 11 are located in a plane x, x containing the axes of the needles 1. In a modification, shown in Fig. 6, both marginal portions 13, 14 are located on the same side of the plane x, x. In another modification, flanges 16, 15, Fig. 7, are provided at the inner and outer peripheries. Further modified forms of the cage are shown in Figs. 9 and 10. Figs. 15, 16 and 18 show a modification in which ribs 39, 40 formed on the surfaces of the cage are deformed adjacent roller apertures 34 so as to constitute projections 36 which prevent the rollers from falling out. Inner and outer parts 44, 45 of equal thickness c are provided as centring bearing surfaces of the cage, the thickness of the intermediate portion decreasing from a valve c to a valve b. The inner part 44 may be omitted. The cage apertures may be formed in a single ring, as in Fig. 1, or in two concentric rings, as in Fig. 2. Several rollers may be arranged end to end in each socket. The material from which the cage is made is preferably softer than that of the rollers.
