Abstract

825,951. Electrolytic purification of titanium. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. Nov. 4, 1957 [Aug. 2, 1956], No. 23827/56. Drawings to Specification. Class 41. Titanium is purified by electrolytically decomposing under a rigorously purified inert atmosphere an anode of impure titanium in an electrolyte consisting of a mixture of fused halides of alkali and/or alkaline earth metals which is rigorously purified by removal of metals, hydrogen, oxygen and other titaniumhardening impurities. Typically the fused halides are purified in the same cell as is used for purifying the titanium, first by bubbling hydrogen chloride through the melts then electrolytically, the graphite anode and molybdenum cathode used in the electrolytic purification being replaced for the titanium purification by the impure titanium anode and a pure titanium cathode, which prior to insertion is etched in aqueous hydrofluoric acid and prior to the refining of the titanium is subjected to an anodizing treatment. The process may be performed in a silica crucible supported in a stainless steel shell surrounded by an electric heater. The upper portion of the shell and the removable cover are water-cooled and copper tubes brazed to and passing through the cover and fitted with releasable glands and rubber ring gaskets permit the insertion and removal of electrodes without contamination of the cell atmosphere and provide access for vacuum and inert gas, e.g. argon, lines.
