Abstract

825,766. Making bearings; jointing; stretching. OLSSON, C. F. April 15, 1957 [June 28, 1956], No. 20026/56. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXXVI] A method of securing a sleeve to a member fitting in the sleeve comprises inserting the member into the sleeve and thereafter elongating the sleeve to deform it permanently and cause it to clamp on to the member. To make a water-tight joint between two pipes 1, 2 a mild steel sleeve 3 with flanged ends 4, 5 is fitted over the ends of the pipes and the flanges 4, 5 are placed in recesses 17, 13 formed in jaws 16, 12 of stretching means. The jaw 12 is fixed and formed on a jack body 7 while the jaw 16 is formed as an extension of a piston 14 slidable in a cylindrical part 8 of the jack 7. The cylinder 8 is connected by a passage 10 to a cylinder 9 of lesser diameter containing hydraulic fluid and a piston 18 which is moved longitudinally, to move the jaw 16, by the rotation of a screw 19. The sleeve 3 is thus stretched to cause it to clamp tightly on the tube ends. The sleeve may taper slightly from the centre and may have a lining 22 of ductile material. The sleeve may be thickened at the centre at 23, Fig. 5, and an internal ring 24 may be fitted to provide a stop for the tube ends. A sleeve 3 of soft lead alloy or brittle copper alloy and formed with a large end flange 4, Fig. 6, and small end flange 5 may be fitted over the armoured sheath 25 of an electric cable 26 and elongated to cause it to clamp on to the sheath 25 and form a gland, the flange 4 being drilled so that it may be bolted to a junction box. A further thin sleeve may be inserted under the sheath 25. The sleeve 3 may have internal rings or projections 27. A sleeve 3 may likewise be attached to a rod or spindle to act as a stop or bearing. For connecting insulated electric wires 28.the ends 29 are bared and inserted in a sleeve 3 which is then stretched to cause it to clamp on the wires. Rods or bus-bars may be likewise connected.
