Abstract

Hydrogen cyanide, together with hydrogen, is produced catalytically without the necessity of frequent burning off of carbon and reforming of catalyst by passing, at a temperature of 900-1300 DEG C., a gaseous mixture of ammonia and a hydrocarbon, e.g. methane, over a catalyst comprising one or more platinum metals and additionally one or more of magnesium and metals of the third group of the Periodic Table, a substantial proportion of the additional metal being in the form of the nitride. The catalyst may initially comprise the additional metal in the form of the metal itself, or as a compound thereof, a substantial proportion of which is readily transformed into the nitride during the course of the reaction. The content of additional metal may be up to 90 atoms per cent, preferably 50-80 atoms per cent. Platinum metals specified are platinum, palladium, rhodium, iridium and ruthenium. Group III metals specified are aluminium and lanthanum. Up to 50%, preferably 20-35%, of aluminium may be present. The catalyst may be coated on the inside of a tube of alumina, on filler bodies, or in the form of unsupported strips, wires or lattices. The coating may be applied as a solution of chloroplatinic acid containing aluminium chloride or by deposition from the vapour state, e.g. by allowing a flame of platinum carbonyl halide containing aluminium chloride to burn against the surface to be coated. One or more coatings may be applied. An intermediate layer of a ruthenium salt may be applied to increase adhesion. In the example, reaction was carried out at 1250 DEG C. using 30 mol/hr. of methane.ALSO:A catalyst for the production of hydrogen cyanide together with hydrogen (see Group III) is coated on the inside of a ceramic, especially alumina, tube or on ceramic filler bodies and consists of one or more Pt metals and one or more of Mg and metals of Group 3 of the Periodic Table, a substantial proportion of the latter being in the form of the nitride. Pt metals specified are Pt, Pd, Rh, Ir and Ru. Group 3 metals specified are Al, Sc, Y and La. The coating may be applied as a solution of chloroplatinic acid containing aluminium chloride or by allowing a flame of platinum carbonyl halide containing aluminium chloride to burn against the surface to be coated. An intermediate layer of a Ru salt may be applied to increase adhesion.
