Abstract

Retting liquor, which has been used for retting flax or other fibrous plants, is rendered suitable for use in a further retting operation by subjecting it to aeration whilst in admixture with activated sludge. During retting, volatile fatty acids (e.g. acetic acid) are formed in the liquor and these act as inhibitors of the retting process. However, these acids are destroyed during the aeration. The activated sludge may be produced by the aeration of used retting liquor, provided the volatile fatty acid content thereof is sufficiently low and, if necessary, the used liquor may be diluted, or subjected to a preliminary aeration, to bring the volatile fatty acid content to the desired low level. But the bacteria which produce the sludge become progressively tolerant of greater amounts of the acid, so that the volatile fatty acid content of the liquor may be gradually increased to the maximum concentration in which the bacteria can remain active. Diffused aeration may be employed in the preliminary aeration step, while the aeration in the presence of activated sludge may be effected with brush aerators which may be carried by rafts floating on the liquor. The sludge in the reconditioned liquor may be allowed to settle before the liquor is used in a further retting operation, but the settling period may be limited so that a predetermined quantity of sludge remains in suspension and thus passes to the retting tanks.
