Abstract
825,678. Gas-blast switches. COQ N.V. Feb. 7, 1957 [Feb. 15, 1956], No. 4306/57. Class 38 (5). In a gas-blast switch having a nozzle contact 6, a movable contact 9 co-operating with the nozzle contact, a piston 13 movable within a cylinder 11 and connected with lost motion to the moving contact, and in which the piston and cylinder have co-operating portions 13a, 19 of reduced diameter, the smaller diameter of the annular contact area 20 between the contacts is greater than the diameter of the piston portion 13a of reduced diameter but smaller than that of the unreduced portion of the piston. Thus, when the gas-blast is applied to the space 8 within the nozzle contact, the blast pressure acting on the movable contact holds it firmly in engagement with the nozzle contact until the piston 13 has moved sufficiently for the blast pressure to be applied over the whole of the piston, the contacts then being opened. In the arrangement shown, the piston 13 is movable on the stem 10 of the contact 9 between ribs 14 and the head 15 of the stem, a single spring 18 biasing the piston downwardly and providing contact pressure until the gas blast is applied. The head 15 may be formed as a bushing contact which co-operates with a movable isolating contact 16. Specification 606,860 is referred to.
