Abstract

825,451. Photo-electric detection of oil mists. GRAVINER MANUFACTURING CO. Ltd. Dec. 14, 1956 [Dec. 17, 1955], No. 36242/55. Class 40 (3). Gas from a diesel engine crankcase is drawn by fan through a detector chamber where the presence of lubricating oil mist varies the light falling on a selenium barrier cell, the detector being capable of isolation from the space to be monitored to allow mist-free gas to be drawn through the detector to check its operation. In the circuit in Fig. 4 power is supplied at plug PL1 to feed the lamp L3 which illuminates the photo-electric cell 12 and the lamp L4 which illuminates a comparison cell 23. The outputs of these cells are fed in opposition to the moving coil relay MC/1 and the microammeter MC2. Sensitivity is adjusted by resistor R2, while resistor R3 zeroes the meter. When mist passes between the light L3 and photo-cell 12 an indication of the current change will be given at MC2. At a predetermined level the current through relay MC/1 will close contact MC1 and energize relay B/3 causing contact B1 to change and light the red warning lamp L2. An audible alarm is sounded by closure of contact B2. The fan is cut off by opening of contact B3. Rectifier RECT1 prevents arcing at contact MC1. To reset, the switch PB1 is pressed to bring " kick-off" coil KO into circuit to open contacts MC1. After isolation, mist-free gas is passed through the chamber to test its operation by means of either a manually operated spring valve (Fig. 2, not shown) or a suction pipe. Applications to the detection of vapour mists in air conditioning, refrigerating and gas cooling systems are referred to.
