Abstract

N - b - Aminoethylgentisamide is prepared by adding methyl p genatisate to ethylene diamine. By using 1:3-diaminopropane, N-g -amino-propylgentisamide is obtained. N - b - Hydroxyethylhomogentisamide is prepared by adding homogentisic lactone to ethanolamine in methyl alcohol. Specifications 2562/13, [Class 98(ii)], 524,154, 541,589, 557,750, 557,802, 711,488 and 767,028, [all in Group XX], and U.S.A. Specification 2,356,486 also are referred to.ALSO:Polymers are described which contain from 50 to 2000 units of the formula -CH2-R-CH(COOH)-or of a styrene-itaconic anhydride interpolymer, and from 50 to 2000 of such units esterified by reaction of the -COOH group with a compound of the formula <FORM:0825421/IV (a)/1> wherein R is <FORM:0825421/IV (a)/2> A is H, alkyl or halogen, B is H or alkyl, Z is -O- or -NH-, n is 1 to 6 and m is 0 or 1. Preparations are described wherein styrenemaleic anhydride interpolymer is reacted with N - b - hydroxyethyl - gentisamide, N - b -aminoethyl - gentisamide, N - g - aminopropylgentisamide or N - b - hydroxyethyl - homogentisamide, or wherein N-b -aminocthyl-gentisamide is reacted with a vinyl butyl ether-maleic anhydride interpolymer, a vinyl toluene-maleic anhydride interpolymer, a styrene-itaconic anhydride interpolymer, a dichlorostyrene-maleic anhydride interpolymer, a styrene-citraconic anhydride interpolymer, or polyacrylic anhydride. In these preparations, the polymers are dissolved in dry pyridine and the gentisamide derivative added with heating and stirring, in most cases in an atmosphere of dry nitrogen. In some cases the product is hydrogenated with zinc and hydrochloric acid to ensure the hydroquinone-type structure.
