Abstract

825,243. Measuring lengths photo-electrically. ELLIOTT BROS. (LONDON) Ltd. May 14, 1958 [May 30, 1957], No. 17238/57. Class 40 (3). In the measurement of the length of a metal billet 1 from a rolling mill 2, 3, pulses from a generator 7 coupled to the roll 3 are fed to a computer 8. A count is started and stopped respectively when the leading and trailing ends of the billet 1 pass a photo-cell 5 and an intermediate count is stored when the leading end of the billet passes a photo-cell 6. The final count is divided by the intermediate count and the quotient is multiplied by the distance between the photo-cells 5, 6. In a modification, a number of photo-cells 6 are provided and the intermediate count and distance of the last cell 6 which has been passed are utilized. In a further modification, instead of actual counts and distances from zero, differences are utilized. In another form, the photo-cell 5 is replaced by an electrical connection through the billet and the roll 3 or by a pressure transducer or strain gauge associated with the roll 3.
