Abstract

825,120. Aircraft ventilators. LUNDY MANUFACTURING CORPORATION. Oct. 4, 1957, No. 31086/57. Class 137 A combination fan, valve, and duct structure comprises a cylindrical duct 12, a fan element 14, and a valve element 16 substantially centrally disposed within said duct, said valve element including a plurality of movable blades 56 having first and second positions, said blades in the first expanded position thereof acting to contact the inner surface of said duct to completely seal same, and in the second contracted position to lie in disengaged position with respect to said duct to define an annular opening with said duct through which air may pass, and means for opening and closing said valve upon the starting and stopping of said fan. As shown, motor 104 drives shaft 103 and gear 102 which meshes with gear 105 which in turn meshes with internal ring gear 108 which is capable of rotation on its needle bearings 109. From the ring gear 108 the drive to the fan is communicated to gears 111 and 48 which latter is integral with fan shaft 45. When the motor is started the torque ring 108 upon gear 111 is made to turn its pivot pin 74 through an arc about the axis of the shaft 45, rotating with it valve ring 52 and putting valve-closing spring 54 under tension. The movement of pin 74 is limited by an arcuate slot 114. When motor 104 ceases to drive the fan the torque of spring 54 restores valve ring 52 to its original position and closes valve 16. This arrangement is particularly suited for use in aircraft where a single control for both motor and valve can replace individual controls.
