Abstract

825,063. Fastening railway rails. BRITISH TRANSPORT COMMISSION. May 23, 1957 [April 26, 1956], No. 12851/56. Class 104 (2). In an insulated rail fastening for securing flat bottom rails to concrete sleepers or other foundations a pair of bolts or screw-threaded stems spaced apart a distance slightly greater than the rail foot are located in holes provided in the sleeper and are secured in position by pins passing through holes in the sleeper and eyes in the lower end of the stems, a pad of rubber or other electrically non-conducting material is interposed between the sleeper and rail foot, and insulating clamps held by nuts on the upper end of the stems hold the rail foot in position, an outward limit stop being provided integral with the sleeper or other foundation. In the arrangement shown, the rail 1 is held against a concrete sleeper 2 through the intermediary of a rubber or like pad 19 by clamps 13 abutting an outward limit stop 14 formed on the sleeper 2 on one side and engaging the rail foot by a cut-away portion 15 on the other side. The clamps 13 are mounted on bolts or screw stems 3 held in position in holes 4 in the sleeper 2 by transversely-arranged bars 5 engaging eyes in the stems 3. The clamps 13, of rectangular external configuration, are held down by a flanged nut 9 through the intermediary of helical steel spring collars 11 or rubber bushes and seating cups 12. The pad 19 between the rail 1 and the sleeper 2 is held in position by wedge-shaped pad 16 of rubber or like material arranged beneath the clamps 13 and cut away on its thinner edge to facilitate assembly on the stem 3. The sleeper portion beneath the rail foot is slightly cambered and may be inclined to tilt the rail inwardly. The bolts or stems 3 are accommodated in the sleeper in such a manner to subtend an angle of approximately 90 degrees to the upper surface of the rail foot. Cylindrical countersinks may be provided in the upper surface of the clamps 13 to receive the springs 11 or rubber bushes. The clamps 13 may be made from blocks or plates of laminated resin bonded wood or other electrically non- conducting material. The portions 8 of the holes 7 which are not occupied by the bars 5 may be plugged by wooden or cork plugs and sealed or not with bitumen or the like.
