A device for use in sharpening chisels, plane irons and like tools includes a normally upright supporting element carrying an adjustable guide member for a reciprocatory sharpening stone holder, and adjustable supporting means for the tools to be sharpened also mounted upon the supporting element above the adjustable guide member, the supporting means incorporating a guideway projecting laterally in relation to the supporting-element and which is normally inclined in relation to the adjustable guide member, the laterally projecting guideway being fitted with a tool carrier having means for detachably connecting the tool to be sharpened thereto so that its cutting edge may engage a sharpening stone in the holder. The supporting element 2 consists of a plate or bracket the lower end of which can be mounted in a vice or otherwise secured to a bench. The element has a laterally projecting shelf 3 on which a guide member 4, is secured by a bolt 5 and wing nut 7 so that the member 4 can be adjusted about a vertical axis and secured in adjusted position. Guided in the member 4 is a holder 6 for a sharpening stone 8, the holder having a handle 9 so that it may be reciprocated. The element 2 also has an upstanding part 2a on which is mounted a slider 11 influenced by a coiled tension spring 14. A laterally projecting guideway 13 is secured to the slider by a bolt so that it can be adjusted, about a horizontal axis, to the desired inclination in relation to the guide member 4. The guideway 13 is fitted with a longitudinally slidable tool carrier 17 preferably provided at one end with a flange or one or more locating stops 18 adopted to be engaged by the side edge of a tool 19 to be sharpened. The tool carrier 17 has a bolt 21 adjustable along a longitudinal slot 24 ; a plane iron can be secured by a nut 22 on the bolt, while for securing a chisel a clamping plate 23 is used. In use, the guide member 4 may be adjusted so that the cutting edge of the tool is not at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the stone ; by suitable adjustment of the guide member 4 tools which are wider than the stone can be sharpened. When sharpening narrow cutting edges the tool carrier 17 is moved lengthwise in the guideway 13 to avoid uneven wearing of the stone. Provision may be made for indicating the angle of the tool carrier in relation to the sharpening stone.
