Abstract

824,991. Hose couplings. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. March 31, 1958 [March 29, 1957], No. 10400/57. Class 99(1). In a coupling for hoses used to connect fluid systems on separable units, e.g. tractor and trailer vehicles, and comprising two tubular parts 10, 11, Fig. 1, retained in coupled relation by latch levers 33, the part 11 has a tubular member 22 slidable therein to release the levers when tension is applied to the coupling; the member 22 having an end face 31 on which fluid pressure in the coupling acts to urge it in the direction to release the latch levers, and a flange 25 having an effective area at least as great as that of the face 31 on which the fluid pressure acts in an opposite direction. As shown, a spring loaded sleeve 16 slidable on a tube 13 in the part 10 is engaged by the end 21 of a cylindrical body 18 of the part 11 to uncover radial ports 17 in the tube 13 whilst the head 14 on the inner end of the tube pushes back a spring loaded valve member 19 in the part 11. The bore of the tubular member 22 is connected by radial parts 28 formed therein to an annular space 29 formed on the outer side of the flange 25 and a spring 32 mounted in the annular space exerts an inward thrust on the member 22. The latch levers 33 are urged into engagement with the part 11 by blade springs 38 riveted to the part 10. Alternatively the latch levers are acted upon by coiled compression springs acting between lugs on the levers and the part 10 respectively. In a modification, Fig. 3, the latch means comprise balls 45 movable in radial holes 42 formed in the part 11 and urged radially outwards by or camming surface 44 on the member 22 to engage a circumferential groove 41 formed in the part 10.
