Abstract
824,133. Controlling fire doors. FULKER, L. J. Jan. 17, 1958 [Feb. 7, 1957], No. 4235/57. Class 47 [Also in Group XXV] A self-closing door is prevented from closing by a brake to which force is applied by a tension member including an adjusting member to vary the force and incorporating a fusible link, whereby melting of the fusible link relaxes the brake and allows the door to close. In the exemplified embodiment, each of a pair of double doors 11, 12, Fig. 1, is mounted on three strap hinges, the centre hinges 24, 16 respectively, being of the rising type so that the doors close under gravity. Brake shoes 33, carried by brake arms 28, 35, pivoted at their lower ends engage the rotatable end portions of the upper hinge or each door. The pivots of the arms 28, 35 each incorporates an eccentric member, Fig. 5 (not shown) for adjusting the position of the brake shoes. The upper ends of the arms 28, 35 are connected by a tension member comprising rods 36, 39, 38 an adjustable strainer 37 and a fusible link 51. The doors may be moved by hand against the braking force. The doors have rebated edges and in order to ensure that the door 11 having the inner rebate shall close first, this door is provided with a bracket 48, Fig. 7, which when the door closes, engages and lifts an arm 45 secured to a rotatable rod above the doors. The rod 40 carries above the door 12 an arresting arm 47 which in its dropped position holds open the door 12 sufficiently to allow the door 11 to pass but which is raised to allow the door 12 to close when the door 11 lifts the arm 45. The rising hinges each comprise upper and lower portions 17, 19 provided with sleeves 18, 21 having complementary half-turn helical formation. A tubular shield 21a having an internal diameter which is a little larger than the external diameter of the sleeve 18 is fixed outside the sleeve 21 to constitute an oil cup and a sleeve 18a having an internal diameter which is a little larger than the external diameter of the sleeve 21a is fixed outside the sleeve 18 to constitute a dust shield.
