Abstract

Particles of one or more metals of the group Cu, Ag, Au, Be, Zn, Cd, B, Al, In, Ti, Ge, Zr, Sn, Hf, Pb, V, Nb, Sb, Ta, Bi, Cr, Mo, W, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir, Pt, U and Th are coated with a different metal selected from the group Os, Rh, Ru, Ir, Au, Pt, Pd, Ag, Cu, As, Sn, Ni and Co by being dispersed in ammoniated solution containing a compound of the coating metal and reacting the solution with a reducing gas at a temperature above 200 DEG F. and under a positive partial pressure of reducing gas above 4 atmospheres and under a total pressure sufficient to prevent boiling. Coatings containing two or more metals may be produced by successive reduction of a solution containing compounds of the metals. The solution may be organic or inorganic and acid, basic or neutral, and the compound of the coating metal may be the sulphate, chloride, carbonate, hydroxide, fluosilicate or acetate. If necessary, a hydrogenation catalyst such as ferrous sulphate or sodium sulphide and potassium cyanide, is added to the solution. Reducing gases mentioned are hydrogen, carbon monoxide, methane, producer gas and natural gas. The resulting coated powder may be compacted and/or sintered. Specification 824,092 is referred to.
