Abstract

824,074. Cooling hot granular materials. METALLGESELLSCHAFT A.G., and SCHENCK MASCHINENFABRIK G.m.b.H., C. Nov. 5, 1957 [Nov. 9, 1956; Jan. 29, 1957], No. 34504/57. Class 51 (2). Hot granular material discharged from flash roasters, sintering machines or cyclone furnaces, is cooled during passage down a vibratory, helical, stepped grate 2 supplied with air from a fan 6 through a central tube 4 and ports 7 opening below the grate steps. The latter have forward slots with ports on one or both surfaces, Figs. 4-7 (not shown), and the central tube is vibrated. The steps are disposed on a helical floor 8, parallel to which is a deflecting plate 9 channelling the cooling air, with an adjustable member 9a controlling the gap between the plate 9 and the tube 4. Spent air escapes via a cyclone separator 11 and an offtake 12, and cooled material is discharged through a shoot 5. In a modification, Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown), the cooler forms part of a sinter plant, and is preceded by a rotary classifier and a screen. Hot sinter is separated into fines below a grain size of 10-30 mm., which are cooled as above, and coarse material cooled on a conventional moving grate. Preferably the cut between the screened fractions is made at 10-12 mm. grain size. The fine material is returned to the feed end of the sinter plant.
