Abstract

823,453. Cigarette lighters. SCRIPTO Inc. April 29, 1957 [Feb. 12, 1957], No. 13585/57. Class 75(3) A cigarette lighter having a fuel reservoir which is normally closed to atmosphere and means to open the reservoir to transfer fuel from the reservoir to a wick chamber comprises a centre body section having formed therein a wick chamber containing a wick and a wick type felt, a lower section fixed to the centre section and forming a fuel reservoir, the centre section being further formed with a chamber between the wick chamber and fuel reservoir along a longitudinal axis that does not intersect the wick chamber, the channel opening at an extension surface of the centre section and extending inwardly in lateral communication intermediate its length with the adjacent wick type felt and communicating at its inner end with the fuel reservoir and a valve reciprocably arranged in the channel and manually operable at the exterior extremity of the chamber to allow fuel to pass from the reservoir to the wick channel. A transparent fuel reservoir 10 provided with a metal insert 15 to receive a filling plug 16 is permanently fixed to a centre body section 19 formed with a horizontally inclined channel 20 which communicates with a wick chamber 21 enclosed at its top by a plate 43 and a recess 23. A valve stem 26 outwardly biased by a spring 35 is reciprocably mounted in the channel 20 and has a valve head 27 which is attached to its inner end by two crimps 28 and which prevents communication between the recess 23 and the wick chamber 21 when the valve is in the closed position. The valve stem 26 is slidable in a sealing ring 38 at its outer end and a resilient seating ring 32 is held in position in an annular groove 33 on the valve head 27 at its other end. When the valve 26 is open fuel passes from the reservoir 10 to the absorbent material such as felt 46 in the wick chamber 21 through a felt wick 47 mounted in an aperture 22. The wick 47 occupies only about half the area of the aperture 22 so as to enable air to be displaced through the unoccupied portion of the channel 22 by the transfer of fuel to the reservoir 10. A protective metal cap 39 is fixed to the top of the centre body section 19 by a screw 42 and is apertured to receive a wick holder 44 and the sleeve 60. Superimposed on the cap 39 is a base plate 53 of a windguard structure which includes a pair of opposed shield portions 54 of which the upper end portions 78, 79 are turned inwardly towards one another and the lower end portions are notched at 80, 81 to provide a space to allow access of air to the wick 45. Overlying the windguard base 53 is a spring arm 57 apertured at one end to fit round the tube 60, apertured intermediate its ends so as to provide a clearance fit over a boss 64 on the wick holder 44 and provided at its other end with a hinged eye 66 by means of which eye it is connected to a lighter cover 41. The base plate 53 and the end of the spring arm 57 are secured to the top cap 39 by a flange 61 and an expanded portion 62 on the sleeve 60. The cap 39 and the base plate 53 are held together by an expanded portion 65 and the boss 64 on the wick holder 44. The flint wheel 71 is mounted in the tube 60 in turn received in the recess 49 in the body section 19 by a tubular flint containing sleeve portion 72 telescopically and threadedly mounted in a cover sleeve 74. The flint wheel 71 is aligned with the wick 45 by a lug 77 on the flint wheel yoke 70 which lug 77 engages a further recess 50 in the centre body section 19 which contains spare flints 73<SP>1</SP>. The cover 41 carries a snuffer cap 59 and is held in the open or closed positions by the spring arm 57 and the edge of the cover 41 riding over inclined portions'40 provided on the cap 39.
