Abstract

A shampoo composition comprises water and a ditertiary propylene-1 : 3-diamine of the general formula <FORM:0823303/III/1> wherein R is a saturated or unsaturated, straight or branched aliphatic group containing 12-22 carbon atoms, two of the groups R1, R2 and R3 are of the formula -(CH2)xOH, and the other is of the formula -[CH2)xO]n(CH2)xOH where X is 2 or 3 and n is 0 or 1, or a salt or mixture of salts of such diamines, the composition having a pH of 3.5-6, preferably 3.5-5. Preferred compounds are the dilactates of N - hydroxyethyl - N1 - di - (hydroxyethyl)-oleylamino - propylamine and N - hydroxyethyl - N1 - hydroxyethyl - N1 - hydroxyethoxyethyl - alkyl (tallow) amino - propylamine which may be compounded with hydrochloric acid to yield the correct pH. The salts of any mineral or organic acid may however be used, and the compositions, which may also include perfume, often form gels or pastes at normal temperatures at about 50% concentration.ALSO:Ditertiary propylene-1 : 3-diamines of the general formula <FORM:0823303/IV (a)/1> wherein R is a straight or branched alkyl or alkenyl group of 12-22 carbon atoms, two of the groups R1, R2 and R3 are of the formula -(CH2)xOH, and the other is of the formula -[(CH2)xO]n(CH2)xOH, where x is 2 o 3 and n is 0 or 1 are prepared by condensing an amine RNH2 with acrylonitrile to yield an aminopropionitrile R-NH-CH2-CH2-CN, catalytically hydrogenating this compound to yield a diamine R-NH-CH2-CH2-CH2-NH2, and reacting 1 mole. of the latter product with 3 or 4 moles. of either ethylene or propylene oxide. Salts of the above hydroxyalkyldiamine are obtained by heating the diamine with a solution of a mineral or organic acid, e.g. hydrochloric, phosphoric, formic, acetic, propionic, glycolic, lactic, glyceric, malonic, succinic, maleic, tartaric and citric acids. Details are given of the preparation of the dilactates of N - hydroxyethyl - N1 - di - (hydroxyethyl) - oleylamino - propylamine and of N - hydroxy - ethyl - N1 - hydroxyethyl - N1 - hydroxyethoxyethyl-alkyl (tallow) amino-propylamine.
