Abstract
823,190. Automatic exchange systems; two-way transmission systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Dec. 13, 1957 [Dec. 19, 1956], No. 38844/57. Class 40 (4). In a two-way time-division multiplex a negative impedance amplifier is included in the transmission path. In the exchange system shown, Fig. 1, a channel such as F1 is interconnected with a channel such as F1<1> by causing the energies of the respective channels to be stored on condensers CS1, CS1<1> and causing interchange of the stored energy periodically by closing switches S1 Sh, S1<1> in synchronism, inductance Lh being provided in the common path HW to ensure a complete transfer between the condensers. Each channel is provided with a low-pass filter such as L1/2, C1, L1/2. Other connections may be set up simultaneously over the same highway by using interleaved trains of pulses to the appropriate switches. The energy lost in the switches and inductance is made up (and possibly even an amplification is effected) by the provision of a negative impedance - R in the common path HW. The impedance of the device used may only take on a negative real part in the frequency range to be transmitted and preferably presents a through path to D.C. The transmission band-width of the device should be sufficient to ensure the complete dissipation of energy stored therein in the intervals between pulses. The device must also be open-circuit stable. Special arrangements may be provided for discharging the storage condensers between pulses. Fig. 4 illustrates a suitable device which produces at terminals K an impedance which is a negative version of the impedance R.
