Abstract

An aqueous suspension of mineral matter is coagulated by mixing therewith a basic chloride of a trivalent metal. The mineral matter may be china clay, and the suspension may be an effluent which it is desired to treat so that it can be discharged to a river or re-used. The trivalent metal may be aluminium, iron or chromium, and a suitable basic chloride is aluminium chlorohydrate Al2(OH)4Cl2. The basic chloride, which may be employed in the form of an aqueous solution, may be used in conjunction with another reagent for inducing settlement of the suspended mineral matter, e.g. a colloidal solution of starch in caustic soda.ALSO:An aqueous suspension of mineral matter is coagulated by mixing therewith a basic chloride of a trivalent metal. The mineral matter may be coal, shale, quartz and/or clay, and the suspension may be an effluent which it is desired to treat so that can be discharged into a river or reused. The trivalent metal may be aluminium, iron or chromium. The basic chloride, which may be employed in the form of an aqueous solution, may be used in conjunction with another reagent for inducing settlement of the suspended mineral matter, e.g. a colloidal solution of starch in caustic soda. In examples, aluminium chlorohydrate Al2(OH)4Cl2 is used to treat coal washery liquors, washing water from sand or gravel washing plants, and aqueous suspensions of fly ash from power stations.ALSO:A sugar solution is clarified by mixing therewith a basic chloride of a trivalent metal (e.g. aluminium, iron or chromium). The basic chloride, which may be employed in the form of an aqueous solution, may be used in conjunction with another reagent for inducing settlement of suspended mineral matter, e.g. a colloidal solution of starch in caustic soda. In an example, unrefined sugar solution is heated to 180 DEG F., to it there is added bone char (which has been used once), aluminium chlorohydrate Al2(OH)4Cl2, sufficient lime to bring the pH to 7, and a small amount of kieselguhr filter aid, and the mixture is then filtered.
