Abstract

A catalyst, suitable for polymerizing a -olefins (e.g. ethylene in particular but also propylene and styrene), is prepared by mixing alumina or silica or alumina silica (which has preferably been pretreated at 250-500 DEG C. for about 1 hour) with a Group IV, V or VI transition metal halide and heating the mixture in presence of an inert gas (e.g. H2, N2, CH4, CO, He) in an open system at 115-850 DEG C., preferably 250-500 DEG C. Preferably the catalyst contains 1-10%, particularly 2-7% of halogen. In polymerization, the catalyst is used in presence of a promoter which is a Group I, II or III metal or hydride, carbide or alkyl thereof; the promoter is especially LiAlH4, but also mentioned are Na, K, LiH, NaH, KH, MgH2, CaH2, NaBH4, AlEt2Cl and AlEt3 (where Et + ethyl). The preferred halides are TiCl4, ZrCl4 and VCl4; also mentioned in specific Examples are TiBr4, TiF4, VOCl3, CbCl5, TaCl5, MoCl5,W Cl6. Polymerization is preferably conducted in presence of an inert hydrocarbon solvent such as n-heptane, n-octane or benzene, but particularly xylene or iso-octane.ALSO:Olefins, particularly ethylene, propylene and styrene, are polymerized at up to 350 kg/cm.2 pressure and 50-350 DEG C. with a catalyst (see Group III) which is the reaction product of Al2O3, SiO2 or Al2O3-SiO2 with, preferably, TiCl4, ZrCl4 or VCl4 at 115-850 DEG C., to which a promoter, preferably LiAlH4, has been added. Preferred polymerization conditions are:- (a) 0.01-10, particularly 0.1-1 parts by weight of promoter per part of catalyst; (b) 125-200 DEG C.; (c) 35-280 kg/cm.2; (d) presence of an inert hydrocarbon solvent such as n-heptane, n-octane or benzene, and particularly xylene or iso-octane.
