Abstract
822,619. Linear dimension gauges. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. Oct. 25, 1957 [July 26, 1956], No. 23111/56. Class 106 (2). A device for effecting linear adjustment comprises a guide 2, a unit 6 movable along the guide and a parallel rod 3 to a position of initial adjustment, an element 9 capable of independent movement, an adjuster 10a on the unit 6 and associated with the rod 3 so that fine adjustment may be effected through the rod 3. As shown, a height gauge index member is attached to the movable element 9 which is pivoted on an arm 6c of the unit 6. The arm 6c can be secured in any desired position on the guide post 2 by a clamp 7 and further fine adjustment is obtained by rotating a knurled knob 5 and thus the hexagonal rod 3. A bushing 10 is free to slide on the rod 3 and engages, by an external thread, the arm 6. Thus rotation of rod 3 raises or lowers bushing 10 and turns the element 9 about its pivot 8. The head 9a of the element 9 is held in contact with the bushing 10 by a coil-spring 11 acting through a washer 12. In alternative embodiments, a tension-spring may be anchored to the washer 12 and to the bushing 10 to provide the required contact, or the head 9a may engage between two collars on the bushing 10, adjustment, to allow for wear, being provided. The device may also be used for horizontal operation. The rod 3 may be of other prismatic form or may be splined. A height scale may be associated with the arm 6 and the element 9 may co-operate with a vernier or the knob 5 may have a scale marked on it. In certain cases, the unit 6 may be in the form of a nut on a screw-threaded guide, the pitch of which is somewhat coarse; the guide being rotatable to effect the initial adjustment. The element 9 may be part of a parallel-motion linkage for supporting a gauge.
