Abstract

<PICT:0822533/III/1> <PICT:0822533/III/2> Grain-oriented ingots are cast in a mould cavity 18 (Fig. 1) formed in rammed pulverulent moulding material 13, and lined with a compacted mass of pulverulent material 16 which emits heat by an exothermic reaction when contacted with the molten metal, the ingot being formed by removing heat through a base-plate 10 to coolant flowing through a heat-exchanger 11. The material 16 is thicker towards the top to ensure that solidification of the melt progresses from the bottom to the top to obtain an ingot composed of elongated columnar grains. The material 16 may be a mixture of crushed fired clay, powdered aliminium, iron oxide and sodium nitrate. When the ingot is grown on a seed slab 25 (Fig. 4) at the bottom of the mould, the slab 25 is insulated from plate 10 by being supported on spacing elements 26, so that the surface of the seed slab may melt before solidification begins. A limited flow of molten metal passes through a space 28 and fills the insulating space under the slab 25 and solidifies therein, so that heat is then extracted from the melt in the mould by the heat exchanger.
