[Also in Groups XX and XXV] In a machine in which two parts are movable in a given direction, each part carries a recessed rod engageable with a catch and each rod has an unrecessed portion which slidably engages the catch to prevent it from engaging the recess in the other rod so that only one rod and its associated part may be moved out of range of the catch. Preferably, the parts carry a radioactive source and a ray-responsive device and the interlock prevents either of the parts from being moved to a position in which the source is unshielded. As shown, the device and source are a radiation gauge in a continuous rod cigarette - making machine. A stream of tobacco is carried on a moving paper web 1 between fixed guides 2 and the mass flow of the stream is measured by a #-ray source in box 3 and an ionization chamber contained in casing 4. The #-ray source is shielded when the carrier 6 of casing 4 is in position or when carrier 5 of box 3 is moved to a position adjacent a stationary part of the machine. Carriers 5 and 6 have bolts 14 and 15 attached thereto. When both carriers are in the source-shielded position either can be moved, the latches 16, 17 (not shown) being retained on the thickened stem portion of one bolt 14 or 15, thus allowing the recessed head portion of the other bolt 15 or 14 to be withdrawn therebetween. Attempted withdrawal of the remaining bolt, which would expose the #-ray source, brings about engagement between the latches and the recessed head of the bolt. Reflecting prism 19, carried on the stationary part of the machine, allows inspection of the source in the shielded position of carrier 5.
