Abstract
822,261. Bonded fibrous materials. OWENSCORNING FIBERGLAS CORPORATION. Nov. 30, 1955 [Dec. 10, 1954; Dec. 27, 1954], No. 34342/55. Class 140. A method of producing thermally stable elements from glass fibres or thin glass films or flakes comprises the steps of applying to the said fibres films or flakes an aqueous composition, the solids of which include silicic acid and drying the composition to allow the solids to bind to the surfaces of the fibres, films or flakes. The term " silicic acid " refers not only to H 4 SiO 4 but also to silicic acid which can be formed in situ by reaction of an alkali metal silicate with boric acid. The solids of the composition include both dissolved and suspended normally solid substances. Silicic acid alone or with a resinous condensation product of boric acid and/or a siliceous filler may be used as the sole binder for glass fibres or can be used to modify a glass fibre product employing a conventional organic resinous binder of the types already known or a resinous binder comprising an organic borate as described in Specification 822,262. The siliceous filler may be used together with additional fillers such as carbonates, oxides and hydroxides of aluminium, silicon, boron, calcium, magnesium, sodium, iron, lead, zinc, copper, cadmium, indium, tin, antimony, scandium, bismuth, strontium, barium, molybdenum and chromium. Boric acid upon reaction with sodium silicate provides silicic acid and sodium borate together with other borosilicates and sodium borosilicates. A suitable resinous condensation product of boric acid is a reaction product of boric acid with urea and glycol with or without formaldehyde; as the glycol there may be used ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, propylene glycol or glycerol; and in place of urea there may be used dicyandiamide, melamine or guanidine. Suitable siliceous fillers are Kaolin clay, bentonite, Canary clay, finely-divided silica, diatomaceous earth, perlite and vermiculite. Examples disclose formulations of binder compositions comprising silicic acid, or sodium silicate and boric acid, which may be used in treatment of glass fibre structures which have been bonded with an organic resinous material.
