A vertical planing or similar machine comprises a common shaft 1 for the forward feed of a longitudinal slide 10, a transverse slide 16 and a rotary table 38, a coupling 5 movable to connect either of the slides to the shaft and a second coupling 24 movable to connect the table to the shaft only when the first coupling is in a neutral position. When the table drive clutch 24 is connected to the clutch 25 by movement of a lever 18, the table is rotated through gears 29-34 and 36 and, when a clutch 41 is engaged with a clutch 27a, the table can be indexed by a crank 42 associated with a dividing head 43. A locking-pin 19 prevents movement of the lever 18 except when the clutch 5 has been placed in the neutral position by a lever 2. When any one part is being moved by power, hand adjustment of the other two parts is possible. The worm 36 can be swung out of engagement with the table 38 by a lever 35. This frees a locking-bolt 52 to allow an indexing plunger 44 to be moved into engagement with the table 38. The table can then be turned by hand to index it in co-operation with movement of the plunger 44 by a lever 46.
