Abstract

822,200. Moulding glass. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Dec. 6, 1957 [Dec. 13, 1956], No. 38109/56. Class 56. The manufacture of a moulded glass body includes the steps of mixing glass powder with a binder consisting of an acrylic resin which is capable, on heating to a temperature below the sintering temperature of the glass, of being depolymerised to the monomeric form without decomposition of the monomer, pressing the resulting mixture in a mould to form a compact of the desired shape, heating the compact at a temperature below the sintering temperature of the glass and for a time such that the acrylic resin is depolymerised and the monomer thus produced is substantially completely removed by volatilisation and further heating the compact at a higher temperature and for a time such that the particles of glass are sintered together to form a coherent dense vitreous body. Preferably the acrylic resin is a polymer of a lower alkyl ester of methacrylic acid such as butyl methacrylate. The resin is employed in the range of 5-15% by weight of the weight of glass powder. The glass compositions used are as specified in Specification 817,636. The binder may be introduced in the form of a solution in a volatile solvent which evaporates below the depolymerisation temperature, sulphur-free toluene being suitable for butyl methacrylate. Finely divided powdered resin may alternatively be used.
