822,161. Hydraulic pit props. BOCHUMER GESELLSCHAFT FUR GRUBENAUSBAU UND TECHNIK. May 4, 1956 [May 6, 1955], No. 13892/56. Class 20(2) An hydraulic pit prop 1, Fig. 1, is initially set by low pressure liquid supplied through a conduit 35a having inserted therein a pump 36, Fig. 6, operable to apply the full setting pressure to the prop. The low pressure water from a supply pipe 34, Fig. 5 (not shown), passes through the conduit 35a, through non-return valves 38, 40 of the pump 36, and then through the conduit 35 and a non-return valve in a valve casing 22 into an annular chamber 7 between the outer prop member 1 and inner prop member 2. From the chamber 7 the water passes through recesses 5 in a guiding ring 4 at the bottom of the inner member 2, into the working space of the prop, causing the prop to extend until the inner member 2 engages the mine roof. The pump 36 is then operated to apply the full setting pressure to the prop. One or more packings 6 are mounted on the inner prop member 2 beneath a closure cap 3. A bore 11 in the inner member 2 is so positioned as to move outside of the cap 3 at a predetermined maximum extension of the prop so that pressure liquid can escape from the working space to prevent the guide ring 4 from bearing against the packings 6. A spring element 12, for example, a rubber band extends along the prop axis between holders 16, 17 rotatably mounted in the lower end of the outer member 1 and in the upper end of the inner member 2 respectively, the element 12 serving to retract the prop when the pressure is released by means of a pressure relief valve in the valve casing 22.
