Abstract

Aluminium and aluminium alloys are treated, prior to a polishing and brightening treatment, to re-crystallization at a temperature above that of homogenization and preferably at a temperature 10-30 degrees below the solids. The articles may be in the cast condition or may have been plastically deformed. The treatment may be carried out during another process, e.g. when solution-heating before age hardening, the solution heating temperature may be increased to 600 DEG C and maintained for 8-10 hours. It is stated that the reflection of a polished surface after the treatment is considerably higher than that obtained without the treatment, even with alloys containing 0.029% iron.
