Abstract

821,931. Nuclear reactor control rods. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Oct. 7, 1947 [April 1, 1947], No. 26977/47. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(4). In a nuclear reactor, both the fuel and shut down rods are mounted in cylinders which are inserted into the moderator through channels in the shielding. Both sets of rods may be air cooled and each shut down rod is urged into the reactor along its cylinder by compressed air. The escape of radiation from the pile interior through the channels is prevented by the radially stepped form of the cylinders which act as plugs. Each shut-down rod is maintained at the outer end of its associated cylinder, away from the core, by a solenoid which, when de-energized permits the rod to be forced, by compressed air, to the opposite end of the cylinder, inside the core. The cooling air, which flows through the cylinder from the inner to the outer end may be used to return the shut-down rod to its outer position. Indicating switches are operated by the shutdown rods at the inner and outer positions and each rod consists of a steel tube filled with boron carbide powder and the outer cylinder is of aluminium.
