Abstract

821,894. Fencing. SMITH, H. S. May 9, 1957 [May 14, 1956], No. 14717/57. Class 45. A roadway guard or fence comprises a side plate having an outwardly bulging upper portion, and bolting means for fastening the plate to the roadway. At longitudinally spaced stations along a guard comprising side plates 1, 2 having upper bulged portions 5, each plate has a projection 9 and lugs 8, 11. At each station a washer 13 rests on a projection 9 and a lug 8, and a bolt 15 passing through the washer and slotted holes in the lugs is screwed into a nut 18 fixed in the roadway 17. The ends of the plates, which may be steel, aluminium, reinforced plastic or fibreglass, have tongues engaging the inside surface of adjacent plates, and an expansion packing may be placed between adjacent plates. The ends of the plates on opposite sides of the guard may register or be staggered. In modifications the fixing bolts may be inclined to the vertical or be replaced by ground anchors. In a further modification the lugs 8 and projections 9 are replaced by troughs which may be formed by folding the side plates, and the washers have depending projections engaging the troughs. The space between the plates may be filled with concrete.
