Abstract
821,346. Lubricating. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. Oct. 31, 1956 [Nov. 14, 1955], No. 33314/56. Class 12 (3). A roller bearing 6, located between hollow rotary shafts 2, 4, is lubricated by oil from a reservoir 48 to which the oil is supplied, through scoops 69 in the wall of the shaft 4, from a nozzle 64. Scoop projections 54 are attached to the outer periphery of shaft 4 and these have shaped leading edges 60 which intercept the lubricant stream being ejected from nozzle 64, Fig. 5. Alternatively, the scoop has an extension 54<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 4, or is formed integral with the shaft, as in Fig. 7, or comprises a scoop ring 120, Fig. 8, attached to the shaft and having scoop projections 122 aligned with holes 67<SP>111</SP> in the shaft. The scoops are equally spaced circumferentially about the shaft 4 and the velocity of the lubricant stream is so arranged that the lubricant will travel substantially the chord distance l, Fig. 5, during the time interval which elapses from the passing of one scoop out of the lubricant stream to the interception of the lubricant stream by the succeeding scoop. After leaving the bearing 6 the lubricant flows through a channel 34 and port 36 in the shaft 4 to lubricate a ball-bearing 102 supporting the shaft 4.
