Abstract

A fluorination catalyst, stated to be of extended life compared with constituent (a) alone, comprises (a) chromium oxyfluoride (preferably 5-95, particularly 80-20, especially 80%) and (b) aluminium fluoride (balance). The catalyst may be pelleted with, e.g., graphite and sugar, and may be regenerated with oxygen at about 500 DEG C., when poisoned. By means of this catalyst, various chloro- and bromocompounds (see Group IV (b)) are reacted with HF, the halogen in these compounds thereby being replaced with fluorine. Specification 790,335 is referred to.ALSO:Halogen compounds are fluorinated with HF in presence of chromium oxyfluoride-aluminium fluoride catalyst. In examples: CH2Cl2 gave CH2F2 and CH2ClF; CH3.CCl3 gave CH3.CF3, CH3.CClF2, CH2 : CClF and CH2 : CCl2 CH2Cl.CH2.CCl3 gave CH2=CH.CF3. Other starting materials mentioned: chloro- and bromo-substituted derivatives of methane, ethane, propane, butane, hexane, propylene, butylenes, pentylenes, methylacetylenes, ethylacetylenes and pentadienes.
