Abstract

820,632. Waveguide directional couplers. MARIE, G. R. P. April 18, 1957 [April 28, 1956], No. 12807/57. Class 40 (8). A filter for separating two frequency bands comprises a waveguide directional coupler having a number of coupling waveguides whose cut-off frequency lies between the inner limits of the two bands to be separated. As shown in Fig. 4, a square-section waveguide 10 along which energy of both bands propagates is coupled by means of two series 17, 18 of waveguide sections to a pair of secondary waveguides 11, 12 of rectangular section. Only the energy in the upper frequency band is transferred to the secondary guides 11, 12 since the coupling guides are beyond cut-off for the lower band of frequencies. The secondary guides are coupled by an E-plane T-junction to a common output 14. By providing two pairs of secondary guides coupled to all four sides of the main guide 10 by four series of coupling guides, band separation can be achieved independently for two systems of waves polarized at rightangles in the main guide (Fig. 5, not shown). A simplification may be obtained by using one of the electrically identical halves of the construction of Fig. 4 obtained by bisection in the plane 20, 21, 22. In such a modification, the main guide 1, Figs. 1, 2, is of rectangular section and of the same dimensions as the single secondary guide 2. The coupling guides 4, 5 all have the same cut-off frequency, those near the centre of the coupling being dimensioned for a higher characteristic impedance than those near the extremities. The guides are spaced at intervals of one quarter wavelength at the upper mid-band frequency and are an odd number of quarter wavelengths long at this frequency. Concentration of the energy in the upper band near the ends of the coupling guides may be obtained by means of dielectric slabs 6, 7 having the profile and cross-section shown. This construction of coupler is applicable to all the modifications.
