Abstract
820,563. Phonographs. WINTER, P. E. May 11, 1956 [May 11, 1955], No. 13657/55. Class 40 (2). A transportable record-player for disc records comprises a case having an edge-wise slit 10 for insertion of a record, a pair of gripping members 11, 12 for supporting and positioning a record for rotation about its central axis and an actuating element adapted to be moved by the record to cause one of the gripping elements to be moved towards the other and hence grip the record between them. The member 12 is mounted for free rotation about a member 16 whilst the member 11 is carried by a shaft 13 which is slidably and rotatably mounted on a member 15, the member 11 being urged towards the member 12 by a spring-loaded bearing 17. The record is first lowered on to a roller 47 and then pressed downwardly so as to move a lever 20 and actuate a trigger 73. The trigger 73 applies a pull to a wire 71, thereby releasing a latch 42 to free the member 11. As the member 11 moves, a fork member 40 is swung about its pivot, thereby allowing a wire 33 to slacken sufficiently to permit the pick-up head 27 to engage the record under the action of a spring 32. Movement of the lever 20 also actuates the electric motor which is embedded in a mass of sponge rubber 49 and incorporates a rheostat control, the record being rotated through a roller 47 in frictional contact with its rim. At the end of the playing period an arm 53 is engaged by a counterweight 34 to switch off the power supply. A key 93 is depressed to withdraw the member 11 from the member 12 and pull the tone-arm 26 away from the record. Downward gravitational movement of the tone-arm causes upward movement of the counterweight 34 to release the arm 53 and allow the switches to return to the " on " positions. Withdrawal of the member 11 releases the record so that the lever 20 swings upwardly displacing the record into a withdrawal position. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the member 12 is replaced by two rollers and the member 11 is mounted on a lever pivoted about one end.
