Abstract

820,220. Tunnel kilns. S.I.T.I. July 26, 1956 [July 28, 1955], No. 23107/56. Class 51 (2). A continuous tunnel kiln for firing ceramics comprises superposed tunnels 1 and 2 through which the wave is traversed on batts carried by roller-way conveyers 3 and 4 respectively, in which each roller 5, Fig. 4, extends through the tunnel walls 7 and is driven by sprockets 6 engaging a chain. The rollers are made of stainless steel or silicon carbide and are fluidcooled by a fluid selected according to the operating temperature, e.g. air, water or oil. The protruding ends of the rollers are covered by cooling chambers 8 supplied with air at a pressure higher than that inside the tunnel. The batts are made of silicon carbide plates in a stainless steel frame.
