820,138. Microtomes. UBERMIKROSKOPIE, E. V. ZU DUSSELDORF G.m.b.H. FUR. May 21, 1957 [June 22, 1956], No. 16036/57. Class 97(1) In a microtome having a specimen carrying bar pivoted about a ball and socket or Carden joint for movement past a cutting blade, the bar has a guide surface which slides on a fixed counter-guide surface during the cutting operation. As in Fig. 1, the specimen 1 is carried by a bar 13 which is pivoted about a ball and socket joint in a fixed frame part 5c so that the specimen can be moved downwardly past a blade 2 and then laterally and upwards clear of blade 2 for another cutting operation. For guiding the bar 1 during the cutting operation, the bar is attached at 18, Fig. 4, to a member 19 having a flat surface 19a which slides on a guide surface 20 provided on a frame part 5a, these surfaces 19a and 20 lie in the longitudinal plane of symmetry of the microtome during the cutting operation. Cables 36, 37 extend from the bar 1 to a part 31 and a part 31a, pivoted to the part 31 at 38 under spring action, and press surfaces 19a, 20 together. The vertical and lateral movements of bar 1 are effected by manual or motor drive of a cam disc 43 having two cam surfaces for contact with bar 1 and part 31 respectively. Spinner 1 is moved towards blade 2 after each cutting operation by warming bar 1 either by the hand or by heating coil 14.
