Abstract

819,781. Tarnish - resisting paper &c. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Aug. 31, 1955 [Aug. 31, 1954; June 1, 1955], Nos 25269/54 and 15734/55. Class 96. [Also in Group XVII] Tarnish-resisting paper, e.g. jewellers' tissue for wrapping silver &c., strawboard or millboard, for protecting metals from being tarnished by sulphur compounds, is made by coating or impregnating a web of paper &c., with at least 2 per cent by weight of chlorophyll or a substituted chlorophyll wherein the phytyl alcohol residue and a methyl group have been substituted, at least in part, by the residue of a straight-chain alcohol having the formula CnH 2n + 1 OH where n is 12, 14, 16, 18 or 20, applied in the form of a solution, the solvent then being evaporated. The chlorophyll may be water- or oil-soluble and may be, or include, sodium-, sodium-copper-, or sodiumpotassium-copper-chlorophyllin. The solution may contain sufficient non-corrosive wax, e.g. cetyl alcohol or ceto-stearyl alcohol and tannic acid to give to the paper the following relative proportions by weight : chlorophyll 1-2, wax 3-12, tannic acid 1-6. The solution may also contain an alkaline substance or an organic base. For example, solutions containing watersoluble chlorophyll may also contain borax or an alkali metal hydroxide, carbonate or bicarbonate such as sodium carbonate or bicarbonate. The paper may contain from 60 to 160 per cent of an alkali metal bicarbonate computed on the weight of chlorophyll. Solutions containing oil-soluble chlorophyll may also contain a primary, secondary or tertiary amine, an amino-alcohol such as mono-, di- or tri-ethanolamine, or morpholine. Water-soluble chlorophyll may be dissolved in aqueous ethyl alcohol. Oil-soluble chlorophyll may be dissolved in benzene, toluene or isopropyl alcohol, e.g. mixed with water when tannic acid is also to be taken into solution.
