Abstract
819,750. Ornamenting. FLUCKIGER, A., and FLUCKIGER, P., [trading as FLUCKIGER & CIE]. Jan. 21, 1957, No. 2080/57. Class 93 [Also in Groups XVIII and XIX] In a process for the manufacture of an instrument dial e.g. a clock or watch dial, a mould is prepared as a negative of the dial, a metallic layer is applied to said. mould, the dial plate is applied to said layer and the mould is removed to transfer the metallic layer to the dial plate. The mould 1, Fig. 6, is of a plastic material, has depressions forming the negtaive of the dial markings and is force fitted within a plastic ring 4. A layer 5 of a first metal e.g. gold, is applied by vacuum evaporation to the front faces of the mould 1. and the ring 4 and is then removed by a suitable adhesive e.g. adhesive regenerated cellulose paper sheet from all but the depressions of the mould, Fig. 3. A layer 6, Fig. 6, of a second metal e.g. silver is now applied by vacuum evaporation to the front face of the mould 1 and the ring 4. A pin 11 is inserted in a central recess in the mould. A thin metallic layer 7 e.g. of nickel or copper is now applied by electrolysis to the layer 6 and a suitable adhesive, preferably a resin of epoxy type, is applied thereto. The metal dial plate 9 is applied to the adhesive 8 and the mould 1 is separated from the ring 4 thus ensuring that when the dial plate 9 is withdrawn from the mould 1 by gripping the feet 10 the covering metal layers 6, 7 have a clean edge. The mould may be of a light metal e.g. aluminium and the second metallic layer may be applied either by vacuum evaporation or electrolysis. If the former method is used thepores of the shell 6 are filled by application of a film of pewter again by vacuum evaporation. If the layer 6 is obtained by electrolysis the layer 7 is applied as before. The adhesive may be in the form of a plastic powder against which the metal dial plate is struck before being withdrawn from the mould. The dial plate itself may be made of a powdered plastic material and a metallic powder may be incorporated therein to obtain a metallic appearance. If the top metallic layer is of copper a clock dial may be obtained by oxidization of the layer.
