Abstract

819,670. Motor vehicles; propelling vehicles. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. Aug. 24, 1956 [Sept. 26, 1955], No. 25923/56. Classes 79(2) and 79(3) [Also in Groups XXIV, XXVI and XXVII] In a vehicle having a free piston gas generator feeding, simultaneously or not, a driving turbine for the road wheels and an auxiliary turbine, the mechanism driving auxiliary apparatuses is characterized in that its driving shaft is driven by one or other of two free wheels driven respectively by a movement originating in the output shaft of the driving turbine and by a movement originating from the auxiliary turbine fed by a pipe for delivering the exhaust gases of the generator to the atmosphere. The free piston gas generator 1 drives a main turbine 3 to propel the vehicle, or an auxiliary turbine 6 when turbine 3 is not in use and gas is passed to the atmosphere through valve 2 and pipe 5. Shaft 9, driven by one of the free wheels 8, 11 connected to the drive shafts of the turbines by drive transmitting means 7, 10, drives variable speed auxiliary apparatuses 12 and, through a change speed device 14 and shaft 13, constant speed auxiliary apparatuses 15, 16, 17, 18 and 21. The change speed device 14, which may be of the belt and extensible pulley type, is moved to the left or right by a piston 25 and flange 24 to lower the speed of rotation or raise it respectively. The piston 25 is acted upon on one side by fluid from a pump 27, driven by a shaft 9, and a spring 26, and on the other side by fluid pressure from generator 1. When the vehicle is stopped the pressure from the generator is at the minimum so the piston 25 and flange 24 are kept toward the left, the turbine 6 driving shaft 9; with the vehicle at maximum speed and maximum pressure from the generator the forces on piston 25 are balanced so it remains to the left; with the vehicle slowing down but still maximum pressure from generator, e.g. when vehicle approaches a hill, the pressure from the generator 1 is greater than that from the pump 27 and spring 26 combined so the piston 25 and flange 24 moves to the right to raise the speed of rotation. A constant ratio transmission 19 from shaft 13 drives, through a centrifugal clutch 20, a braking air compressor 21 which can be driven through clutch 22 by an electric motor 23 when the gas generator is idle. In Fig. 2, not shown, the pump 27 is replaced by a governor acting on a lever which acts on the piston.
