Abstract
819,278. Refrigerating; heat pumps. CARRIER ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Dec. 11, 1956 [Feb. 20, 1956], No. 37884/56. Class 29 [Also in Group XXIX] A reversing valve for use in a refrigerating system so that the functions of condenser and evaporator may be interchanged consists of a movable member 30 having an axial bore 31 for the passage of refrigerant and resilient sealing rings mounted in grooves 32 at each end for co-operation with seatings formed in the valve housing 21 and in a union 20 and an end cap 22. The member 30 is operated by a hand lever 39, 35 pivoted at 36<SP>1</SP>, sealed by a bellows 38, and loaded by a spring 40 to provide a snap action from one extreme position to the other. With the member 30 in the position shown refrigerant from the compressor 10 enters the valve housing through/a passage 26 and passes out through a passage 27 to a heat exchange coil 12, a capillary type expansion means 13, and a heat exchange coil 14, the refrigerant then re-entering the valve housing through a passage 28 and passing through the bore 31 to an outlet 15 leading to the compressor inlet. When the valve member 30 is moved to its other position the flow of refrigerant through the circuit 12, 13, 14 is reversed. In a modification, the valve member is actuated by a coaxial stem extending through a hole in the plug 22 and surrounded by a sealing bellows, whilst in a further modification the lever 39 is operated by a bimetallic element in response to variations of temperature in an area which is required to be heated or cooled.
