Abstract
818,335. Electrolytic production of perchloric acid. MERCK A.G., E. May 28, 1957 [July 5, 1956], No. 16958/57. Drawing to Specification. Class 41. A process for the production of perchloric acid is characterized in that an aqueous solution of perchloric acid of a concentration between 10 and 60 per cent by weight containing dissolved elementary chlorine is subjected to anodic oxidation, preferably at below room temperature. The cathode may be of graphite, or silver, platinum, copper or their alloys. The anode may be of metals of the platinum group and alloys thereof. Typically, an aqueous solution of perchloric acid is pumped from a supply container to a cooler and thence passed to a stage where it is saturated with chloric and thereafter to the anode space of a two-compartment cell where part of the dissolved chlorine is oxidized to perchloric acid at a platinum anode. The acid is run from the anode space back to the supply container. Part of the electrolyte at the anode is transferred to the cathode space through a stretched polyvinyl chloride porous diaphragm to make good the dilution of the electrolyte in the cathode compartment due to migration of chlorate ions to the anode. After the removal from the cathode outflow of the amount of perchloric acid corresponding to the output of the cell the remainder is also led back to the supply container. The water used up is replaced by addition to the supply container.
