Abstract

818,237. Automatic regulators; temperaturecompensated voltage regulators. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Aug. 15, 1956 [Aug. 15, 1955], No. 24971/56. Class 38 (4). A temperature-stabilized voltage regulator comprises a load having a shunt-connected reference voltage device in series with which is a temperature-compensating circuit. In one embodiment the D.C. source 11 is connected through a regulating resistance 15 to the parallel circuit comprising load 16 and voltage reference device 17 with temperature-compensating means 18. The voltage reference device is a semi-conductor diode operated in the inverse voltage breakdown region, i.e. reversely connected with respect to normal current flow from source 11. In another embodiment the reference device is a gas discharge tube, Fig. 4 (not shown). In each case the temperature-voltage coefficient of the reference device is positive and the compensating device is arranged to have an approximately equal, but opposite, temperature-voltage coefficient. Forwardly biased semi-conductor diodes have a negative temperature-voltage coefficient, the numerical value being, in general, smaller than that for either of the said reference voltage devices. Depending upon this value of reference device temperature-voltage coefficient, either one, or several, forwardly-biased diodes are connected in series with said device so that the net coefficient is approximately zero. If a fractional number of compensating diodes appears necessary a shaping network, e.g. a resistance shunt connected with one or more of the diodes, may be provided to give precise compensation.
