Abstract

816,261. Induction furnaces. NATIONAL RESEARCH CORPORATION. March 4, 1957 [April 2, 1956], No. 7111/57. Class 39(3) An induction vacuum furnace comprises two induction coils in parallel, one having half its turns 16 surrounding the upper part of the crucible 12 and its remaining turns 18 surrounding the lower part of the crucible, and the other coil being wound to surround a part of the crucible between the half coils. The half coils are connected to the centre coil at their inner ends, and are reverse wound with respect to the centre coil 15; the outer ends of the half coils are connected and are earthed, and the centre of the coil 15 may be earthed by means of a resistor. The coils may be of copper tubing which is water cooled. Power leads from a generator 40 pass through the furnace wall 10 via a coaxial assembly 26 mounted in an insulating bushing 38, connection being made to the centre coil by conductors 28, 36. Passages for the cooling water may be provided in the coaxial assembly 26. The generator may operate at 800 volts and at a frequency of 960 c.p.s. but the earthing provided for the coils ensures that no portion of either coil is at any time more than ¢ the generator voltage above earth. The arrangement of the coils avoids unbalance of the current in them when the crucible is half full by ensuring that the inductance is equal for both coils. Specification 689,726 is referred to.
