In a motor-mower of the kind having powerdriven ground wheels 23, 24 and a powerdriven cutting blade 75 rotary about a vertical axis the wheels are driven by friction-drive rollers 70, 71 engaging their tyres 59, the drive including change-speed gearing between the motor 27 and the shaft 65 carrying the rollers 70, 71. The machine comprises a platform 22 with dependent flanges forming a housing, the side-flanges having upstanding side-plates 38, 39 and the front-flange being cut away to accommodate a toothed guard 32. At the rear of the machine, a height-adjusting roller 25 is mounted. A bifurcated handle 28 is integral with a pair of plates 48 pivoted to the side-plates 38, 39 the plates 48 carrying the stub-axles of the ground-wheels 23, 24 and the arrangement being that elevation of the handles interrupts the drive by disengaging the ground-wheels from the driving rollers 70, 71, the handles moving over-centre so as to be self-sustaining in either position. To allow for various working-heights the pivots 51 on the handles 48 are movable into various holes 53 in the side-plates 39. The motor 27 drives the cutter-blade spindle 27a directly and is connected by a belt 86 to a pulley 87 on a stub-shaft 88b in a gear-box 22 f through which the shaft 65 passes. A face-gear 93 is integral with the pulley and has two concentric rings of gear-teeth 93a, 93b with which a pinion 95 on the shaft 65 is selectively engageable : the pinion is keyed to the shaft and slidable along it. The gear-box 22f may contain oil, which is prevented from escaping by a flange 87a on the pulley 87. The tension of the belt 86 is adjustable by a jockey-pulley 106, the pulleys 87 and 106 being enclosed between the platform 22 and a cover-plate 116 over the cutterblades 75. The rear part of the platformcasing 22 is formed with an opening 29 for the ejection of cuttings. For cutting-up leaves, a casing 130, Fig. 12, is mounted below the platform 22, the blades 75 being fitted with detachable upstanding lugs 127.
