Abstract
Filaments are produced by extruding molten filament-forming material through a spinneret in the form of at least one filament in semi-liquid state, removing excess heat from the extruded semi-liquid filament near to the spinneret, reheating it immediately thereafter along a portion of its length so as to reduce its cross-sectional area, and collecting the reduced filament in the solidified state at such a rate as to impart not more than 5 grams tensile stress to the filament and preferably to avoid stretching or tensile stress on the filament as far as possible. As shown, suitable apparatus comprises a hopper 4 which feeds filament-forming material, e.g. cellulose acetate, to a screw conveyer having a first screw section 12 of large diameter, substantially completely surrounded by a cooling jacket 14, and a smooth frustoconical section 26 connecting the first screw section to a second screw section 30, the latter being disposed in a heating chamber 20. Filament-forming <PICT:0816016/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0816016/IV (a)/2> <PICT:0816016/IV (a)/3> material in powder form is fused and conveyed by second screw section 30 to spinneret 34 from which it emerges as a semi-liquid filament 40, which is cooled in housing 42, e.g. by application of a vacuum, reheated to a temperature above its melting-point in jacket 46 by heating bands 48, to reduce its denier, and collected on winding device 54 adjusted so that the filament tension indicator never exceeds 5 grams. The single-apertured spinneret 34 may be replaced by spinneret 60 (Figs. 4 and 5) having a concave upper surface 62 and a plurality of tapered apertures 64 which converge on the inlet side so as to give an even overall pressure distribution on the spinneret plate. Soluble and insoluble dyes and pigments may be incorporated in the filament-forming material. Other specified filament-forming materials are cellulose propionate, cellulose acetate/propionate, cellulose acetate/formate and cellulose acetate/butyrate. Specification 777,475 is referred to.
