Abstract
815,528. Discharge apparatus. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. Sept. 18, 1956 [Oct. 21, 1955], No. 16395/58. Divided out of 815,527. Class 39(1). Electron tube apparatus employing an internal cavity resonator 12 interacting with an electron beam, and an external cavity resonator 13 electrically coupled to the internal resonator, is provided with an output iris 23 for coupling the external resonator to the external load, having a capacitive iris-loading member 27 projecting into the vicinity of the opening 23 for tuning the opening and thereby controlling the coupling between the tube and the load. The series resistance of the iris equivalent circuit may be reduced by milling the output flange member 22 to provide a thin walled portion 28 in the vicinity of the iris. Additionally the member 27 and the resonator 13 may be plated with material of good conductivity e.g. gold or silver. As shown a further iris 18 having wave-energy permeable material 19 sealed over it to form a vacuum tight closure is provided between the internal and external resonators.
